Two years already! and what you should look forward to in 2017

Thanks to you my faithful readers, Paris Diary is celebrating two years of cultural reporting!

This newsletter was prompted by my American editor friends Cathleen McGuigan and Susan Reed two Thanksgivings ago, in Sag Harbor. Patricia de Gramont was a great force from California and historian Rebecca Fraser is a continuous influence from London. They are my good fairies. And here we are, two years later with very exclusive readers from all over the world, who share a common love for Paris. A club of fans who trust my strong subjectivity on cultural topics. Thank you for your faithfulness and your constant feedbacks.

And here are a few events you should look forward to seeing in 2017.

A special week end at Centre Pompidou for its fortieth anniversary on February 4 th and 5th: with 102 million visitors and 110 million readers at the library, almost 3 million visitors in Pompidou Metz since 2010, President Georges Pompidou’s vision has proved to be a long lasting success. There have been 325 exhibitions, the best sellers being Dali (twice) with 840 662 in 1980 and 790 000 in 2013,  Matisse, Kandinsky, Jef Koons follow. There are 120 000 works in the permanent collection, exhibited on 15 000 square meters. The architecture by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano was so innovative that the new Design Museum in London features it prominently. Right now, don’t miss a very special Magritte show until January 23, and Cy Twombly until March 29.

Magritte, The art of conversation, 1950 at Pompidou Center

Sixteen Vermeer at the Louvre on February 22 will be part of a Dutch painting exhibition in the newly renovated North European rooms. Odilon Redon landscapes aren shown at the Art museum in Bordeaux until 26 March.

Pissarro at Musée du Luxembourg on March 16 th and the centenary of Rodin at Grand Palais on March 22 as well as an exhibition on “Gardens in the last 6 centuries” from March 15 to July 24. In London the big event which you cannot miss, is obviously the large Hockney show at the Tate, opening on February 6.

Les Choristes, a film about small children during the war who form a choir with their charismatic teacher, will become a live musical show at Folies Bergères from February 23. Some of the children have sung on December 17 th at Gare de Lyon and were a huge success among ski goers.

The reopening of Opéra Comique in late April with “Alcione” by Marin Marais conducted by Jordi Savall. “Le retour d’Ulysse dans sa patrie” by Monteverdi at Théâtre des Champs Elysées also in March.

I can’t wait to tell you about it all…
