Art fairs are always exciting because you never know what you will discover, by chance. This new edition of ArtParis in front of the Eiffel Tower was particularly successful. The weather was lovely, everyone was tanned and art dealers admitted that they had a very good year during lockdown. The first gallery I stepped into was Claude Bernard’s with his paintings by Paul Rebeyrolle, Sam Szafran and Ziad Dalloul. At School gallery, La Fratrie invented crazy little collages and Magnin-A had Nathalie Boutté’s Japanese papers and Ana Silva’s embroidered canvases.
At Galerie Templon, Chiaru Shiota , Jim Dine, Gérard Garouste and Omar Ba all had very beautiful pieces. Daniel was joking with Suzanne Pagé, and celebrating an excellent year. I particularly liked Gérard Garouste’s Bronze statue of Indian an date bird’s nest.
Galerie Rabouan Moussion showed the witty photographs by Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf. At Galerie Lelong, “Red Stack” by David Nash was a beautiful small sequoia wood pile up, and at Galerie.Vazieux, Korean born painter Young-sé Lee had a series of paintings on paper in a one man show. Oliver Debré had a large blue canvas at Galerie Berès, and Erik Desmazières, a whole wall of watercolors and gouaches at Ditesheim & Maffei Fine Art who also showed a large red painting by François Rouan.
Galerie XII showed photographs of herself by Anja Niemi, and I was happy to see Rebecca Hossack had come from London with Dutch artist Carla Kranendonk‘s embroidered patchworks. Her large paintings are made of beadwork, acrylic and collage on canvas. Rebecca Hossack who was the first galerist to exhibit aboriginal art in the 1980’s in London has made a specialty of showing non western art.
There were of course many more brilliant artists at ArtParis and everyone was in a good mood. It launched the season of exhibitions which are many in Paris at the moment. Georgia O’Keefe at Centre Pompidou, Josef and Anne Albers at MAM, Vivian Mayer at Musée du Luxembourg, Yoon Ji Eun at Galerie Maria Lund are all on the agenda this week…
