Aveline is a mysterious antique shop located next to the Ministry of Interior on place Beauvau, a very busy place at the momnet. There are cops everywhere and it is heavily guarded. The entrance is tiny but if you dare walk in, the space (650m2 o two floors) is huge. And until January 10th, it shows « Paradis(e) », a mix of 18 th century commodes and chairs, encoignures and desks in a decor created by Galleriacontinua for Cameroon artist, Pascale Marthine Tayou.
You might remember, my column on Victoire de Pourtalès’ showing the same artist last May. Here, the effect is explosive with his chalk paintings « sitting » on green velvet armchairs. His huge cloud of wool covering the ceiling of the gallery and his glass beads framed by baroque armchairs.
This is a very special paradise, where masks and dolls meet the most precious French furniture. On the walls, hundreds of painted alabaster eggs echo an Empire suspension. Compared to Arcimboldo by the organisers, Pascale Martine Tayou had fantstic fun in hanging his work among such classical Paris decor. Jean Marie Rossi has always been an extravagant antique dealer, his daughter Marella follows on his steps and goes further with this second association with Galleriacontiua after a Michelangello Pistoletto exhibition in 2014.
Galleria continua was also recently celebrating its 25 th anniversary at Centquatre, in the north of Paris. With its exhibition spaces in San Gimignano, Beijing, Les Moulins (east of Paris) and Havana, it is the most original group of galleries with a fabulous list of artists, including Ai Weiwei, Antony Gormlley and Mona Hatoum. And Aveline (94 Fbg St Honoré) is the easy way to get to know them.
