“Rabbit, shadow sculpture”, 2010 by Mac Adams

Welsh born American artist, Mac Adams, admitted it was the first time he had ever come to Musée Rodin. But he spent the whole day in the archives and in the newly restored Hotel particulier of rue de Varenne and loved everything about it.

And he seemed very happy to discuss his collegues’ work in this group show of 8 artists who work « Between sculpture and photography ». He started working with shadows in 1984 and built the Korean War Memorial sculpture in Battery Park in 1991. His mix of Welsh and American accent is totally riveting and I wish he had kept telling me more stories about artistic life in New York. His sense of humor is obvious and I instantly fell in love with « Rabbit, shadow-sculpture » a rabbit in a cage made of a sculpture lit in a very special way. It is so clever.

Especially since two rooms further, Markus Raetz’ « Metamorphose II », 1992 is also about a rabbit, no sorry… a hare.

The first room is devoted to Richard Long, his beautiful black and white photographs « White line of sticks in Somerset » and a granit « Small Alpine Circle » installation. Then comes Giuseppe Penone and his golden tree, John Chamberlain’s crushed cars and finally Cy Twombly with a bronze sculpture « Thermopylae » and some drawings.

The theme of the exhibition set in the chapel,  is a little thin, a little « tiré par les cheveux » (far fetched) as we say in French, but it is worth visiting just for these few artists whose classical work is exceptional. Musée Rodin is a ravishing place and this is a good excuse to go back…
