Happy New Year from my window where the mimosa is already in bloom!

The end of the year was very dramatic in Paris, but with so many signs of friendship and love from all our foreign friends, we are soon recuperating. The Champs Elysées are swarmed with crowds in the very mild weather. Tourists have never been so well treated, good food has never been so important, and we are all waiting for your visit in the New Year.

Musée de l’homme, a fascinating renovation

After a six year renovation, fabulous Musée de l’Homme, located in Palais de Chaillot, has recently reopened for the great joy of children and parents. To see « Lucy » or whatever is left of her is undeniably a special emotion and to enter a world of warriors from 15 000 years ago and discover what they painted in caves and sculpted on mamouth ivory, is just as moving. My first visit on a Wednesday night (less crowded than during the day) with Gilles Nicolas, one of the artists involved in the many exhibition windows, was very pleasant.

I will admit it straight away : Renzo Piano is one of my favorite acrchitects and Fondation Beyeler in Basel, the idea I have of a perfect art gallery. So when I learned that Cité de l’architecture et du Patrimoine at Trocadero, was holding an exhibit of the Italian master, I rushed. And was happily relieved to enter the quiet space, with mostly professionals discussing attentively each building and material he uses. It was the same atmosphere as in his museums.Read More

The 17th century oak wood Christ from Noyon will be restored in February

Three years ago, Olivier de Rohan had an illumination while meeting a few students from Junior Enterprise at Ecole du Louvre, the art school which trains most French curators. As President of « Association pour la Sauvegarde de l’Art francais », he restores unlisted pre 1789 churches all around France. While talking to the students, he had the idea of sending them around the country, like « missi dominici » to find paintings and sculptures to restore. Oriane Guineau, a young woman from the program, chose a beautiful 17 th century, polychrome oak wood Christ, from the Noyon cathedral, which had been abandoned in the « jubé » room. I decided to follow her work and thanks to her, I discovered one of the most charming little towns from Picardie, in the North of France.Read More

A younger President is taking over Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the very special museum dedicated to decorative arts, housed in the Louvre on the Rivoli side, which also includes a museum of fashion.
Pierre-Alexis Dumas, looks so much like his father Jean-Louis Dumas, whom everyone loved and still misses in Paris, that it is moving to see him taking the reins of an institution, run with energy for 18 years by Hélène David-Weil, and for a two year transition by banker Bruno Roger.Read More

I ran into a friend who had seen the exhibition at the pre-pre-opening and told me « it’s very dark, very pessimistic »… Well I am glad I did not listen to her. The Anselm Kiefer retrospective at Centre Pompidou is one of the most powerful, luminous and exciting event that happened this year in Paris. And you have until April 18 th to run and see it.

The cathedral of Saint Denis is mostly a house for French kings to rest in peace. Few people think of visiting this first example of gothic art built on the spot where King Dagobert was buried in 639, even though it is only a twenty minute metro ride from the Madeleine. In June, its sacred music festival is a must. But if you are not in Paris or just feeling lazy, there is now a definitive 500 pages book on the basilica. And the 600 pictures of the church, restored in 2015, will give you a much better idea of its originality. Less far than driving to Chartres and historically fascinating.

When the Baccarat flagship store was located, Place de la Madeleine, my house guests used to bring me presents from the shop and it was very nice… But, yet another luxury hotel, is being built on the site and Starwood capital, who owns the crystal company, had to close the store.
Only to reopen five minutes away, in an even better location, across the street from the Bristol, the now famous « Midnight in Paris » hang out. So I rushed on opening day to check it out for you…Read More
