This week is going to be hot on the drawing side since there are no less than four art fairs, many more exhibitions in private galleries and a large auction by Ader at Hotel Drouot of Talabardon and Gautier‘s paintings. Le Salon du Dessin at the former Stock Exchange, place de la Bourse, Drawing Now at Carreau du Temple, the Paris Print Fair at l’Ecole de Médecine, DDessin on bd de la Tour Maubourg. Galerie Ladrière, Galerie Documents 15, Galerie La Nouvelle Athènes…

Gustave Moreau, The Persian poet, at Hôtel Drouot is sold by Talabardon et Gautier, est. 150 000 to 200 000 €

On March 21 and 23, Hotel Drouot will be more vibrant than ever with the sale of the collections of the famous art dealers Bertrand Talabardon et Bertrand Gautier, nicknamed “Les deux BB” (the two babies). Their exceptional eye has made their reputation of treasure finders, and out of the 350 lots you should be able to find something you like. I would immediately pick this Gustave Moreau watercolor if I could… or the two paintings by Oudry, Hippomène and Atalanta. The exhibition on Monday in room 9 was THE social gathering with many foreign experts looking around and, upstairs the drawings sale by Mirabaud Mercier, was also attracting visitors who had come early for the Salon. Both sales are on Tuesday 21.

Jean Vasserot, “Man drawing on a stone in a landscape”, (detail) 1795, Galerie La Nouvelle Athènes

At Galerie la Nouvelle Athènes,  next door to Musée de la Vie romantique, a pretty choice of XIX th century drawings is presented by Raphaël Aracil de Dauksza and Damien Dumarquez. Isabey, Deveria, Harpignies, Eugène Lami (who also has an exhibition at MAD starting next Friday) and Gustave Doré are among the artists shown in the very pretty gallery.

Louis Leopold Boilly, The Grand father’s feast, 1818, Galerie Terrades at Salon du Dessin

Salon du Dessin founded in 1991 by Hervé Aaron, takes place at Palais Brongniart. The Tuesday afternoon opening is an ultra chic meeting place for collectors and art historians who flock from all over Europe and Great Britain. A special tribute will be paid to Ger Luijten who acquired so many drawings at Salon du Dessin for the Custodia foundation, which he ran since 2010. He died abruptly on December 19 and some of these treasures will be exhibited in a special room. Also part of an unknown collection (10 000 in total) of drawings from Musée de l’Armée will be shown and the Guerlain Prize awarded for contemporary drawing. Nine new galleries will be showing for the first time. The next day, Drawing now in the Marais is dedicated to contemporary galleries and Aline Vidal is presenting this year a great piece by Sigurdsson, Daniel Templon is showing Daniel Dezeuze.

Farhad Ostovani, Primavera (25), 2021 – watercolor, pastel and pigments on a photographic base, Galerie Documents 15

At Paris Print fair, Galerie Brugal in Pont l’Abbé (Brittany) is showing a drawing by Lucien Simon and Documents 15 is exhibiting Jenny Robinson as well as Farhad Ostovani in their main gallery of 15 rue de l’Echaudé. The Iranian artist who lives in France, uses multiple mediums to create almost abstract prints.  Galerie Lelong is showing Fabienne Verdier. This modest fair located at 15 rue de l’Ecole de Médecine (23-26 March) is well worth visiting for its foreign galleries and inexpensive discoveries.

Paul Signac, St Tropez, le Port, 1899 at Galerie de la Présidence, Salon du Dessin

At DDessin, 29 bd de la Tour Maubourg, 40 very young artists will show from 24-26 March. Created by Eve de Medeiros, this fair is devoted to young talents. It is a nice place to discover (yet) unknown artists.

So this week you’ll need your running shoes to cover all the events!
