Hubert Robert (1733-1808). "Le ravitaillement des prisonniers à Saint-Lazare". Huile sur toile. Paris, musée Carnavalet.

“Le ravitaillement des prisonniers à Saint-Lazare”, 1794, Paris, musée Carnavalet/ Roger Viollet.

Before going to the Louvre to see the new « Hubert Robert, a visionary painter » exhibition organised with the National Gallery of art in Washington, I had always thought he was a classical and fairly tedious 18 th century painter. But after seeing the 140 works which have come from all around the world, I am totally fascinated and charmed.Read More

Chiara Skerath dressed in Dior with Richard Plaza and Antoine Palloc

There is something magical about discovering a new voice in a very intimate space. Twenty eight year old soprano Chiara Skerath was singing melodies by Poulenc and Reynaldo Hahn, Schubert and Ottorino Respighi at Eléphant Paname, a private house for the arts, on rue Volney in Paris. These evenings for 110 guests are organized  by former tenor Richard Plaza and Sophie de Ségur for a group of opera lovers called Instant Lyrique, presided by Dr Georges Alcaraz. There will be twelve concerts this year.Read More

When I was a little girl, Easter vacation was a major event. We would all leave Paris for a fortnight in la Sarthe, and egg chasing was a major event on the croquet lawn and around the rose trees. I once received a furry white rabbit which played drums and it remained a great moment of my childhood. Read More

The chess board of Good versus Evil by Maurizio Cattelan

« Carambolages », one of the most awaited exhibitions of the year at Grand Palais, is as extravagant and intelligent as its curator wanted it to be, and will probably create a certain amount of controversy. Its title means crashes in French and it was inaugurated on February 29 th! Jean-Hubert Martin, director of Centre Pompidou from 1987 to 1990 and curator of exhibition « Magiciens de la Terre », invented an « artistic game » with no captions, and the eye as the conducting medium, for enjoying the exhibition. « Listen to your eyes » by Maurizio Nannucci is used as a  motto in neon letters in the first room.  « You don’t need  cultural references to enjoy a work of art » says the curator. He is leading our senses so we can understand what we see in reference to other works, from different periods and styles.Read More

The film has just come out and is creating a buzz

The film “Merci Patron!”, (Thank you Boss) is about David fighting Goliath or the editor of Fakir, a small magazine from Amiens, in the North of France, trying to unveil in a hilarious documentary, the strange methods used by members of the LVMH group. In order to quiet the discontent of many fired workers from Kenzo, in Poix-du-Nord, a member of LVMH security team substantially helps one of the families. When journalist François Ruffin meets Serge and Jocelyne Klur, a couple of irresistible, though soon-to-be-on-the-street former employees of Bernard Arnault, he invents a stratagem to get them some money. And uses childish but efficient means of trapping executives from the LVMH group. All of this happens four years ago, when Arnault, the richest man in France, tries and fails,  to get Belgian citizenship.Read More

Leonetto Capiello, poster Remington, color lithograph circa 1910

When Mucha and Toulouse Lautrec stopped creating images for the walls of Paris, caricaturists and press cartoonists took over and started working for advertising. Among them SEM, the social caricaturist, whose ink drawings line the staircase of the Jockey club in Paris, Leonetto Cappiello (the best artist represented here) or Auguste Roubille. All the posters exhibited belong to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and some date back to 1850.Read More
